Saraz Handpans describes C# Hijaz as F# harmonic minor with a C#3 centre note.

A little history

Hijaz is a harmonic minor scale: a minor scale with a raised seventh. The raised seventh makes a major chord that works well in progressions. Played from a different root it can also be heard as Phrygian Dominant. Saraz Handpans says the scale is common in Middle Eastern, Arabic, Flamenco and classical music, and in many film scores, and calls its mood suspenseful, mysterious and exotic. On the handpan, Saraz Handpans says Hijaz was first popularised by Panart on the first generation Hang.

How to read a chord card

  1. The darker colour is the root; the lighter colour, the other chord tones.
  2. The line under the pan names the notes, root first, with their field numbers.
