A little history
D Kurd is the natural minor scale (the Aeolian mode) on D. Makers say the name comes from the Arabic and Turkish maqam Kurd. That maqam starts with a half step, which makes it closer to Phrygian than to plain minor, so the name is a loose borrowing. You can hear the link from the first rim note: A Bb C D E F G is A Phrygian. Saraz Handpans credits Victor Levinson, builder of the SPB handpan, with popularising the scale and first calling his D minor pans "Kurd". Early viral videos spread it further.
